Parsons Pix
PARSONS NYC 2005 final year class exhibition opening reception tonight where most of the exhibition disappointed us considerably...lots of Nan Golden derivative sad young things distraughtly draped across distressed beds...lots of angry young women taking out their feminista anger against the world through their art...
and surprisingly, for the foremost art college in this city, some poor execution and technical skills demonstrated.
The three that we did like included Julie Mack, whose style is very much a "poor mans" Di Corcia. She was awarded the "Best in Show" but I am not sure that she deserved it. Here are a few pieces of her work:

She is clearly derivative, but does show some unusual if not quirky subjects and seems to be technically adept.
The one that really impressed me was James Escobar...very sensitive, evocative and moving architectural scenes...sad and sorry like something important was missing...part of his heart?... In my humble non professional opinion he is also technically and professionally very good and his subject matter is more interesting...(why do art student always tend to go for portraiture?) ...one of his best is here:
and then there is Art Kaligos, who is clearly more out there, a bit more flippant and having fun, but when you dig deeper he is confronting individuals at their rawest, without pretense often partly clothed and open to the world, flaws and all. Here is one of his:
Try to catch the exhibition at the Aronson Galleries at 5th Ave at 13th St...its on till the 5th of May... or catch some of it here:
try to ignore the student earnestness and focus on these three...artists to watch in the future....
