Nothing beats a quick weekender to Miami's South Beach. Even hung over; with only a few hours sleep after a long night at Cain with the swedes; and even the noisy LGA crowds can't lower your spirits as you board that Song flight to Fort Lauderdale.
The pulse pumps a little faster as you glimpse the pastel high rises looming over the emerald waters and crystal white sands of South Beach. Even the dumbass taxi driver who couldn't seem to find our bolt hole for the next few days - the Delano - didn't affect our mood.
The shoddy welcome from the reception desk and the hour wait at the outside bar for our room to be ready still didn't affect us - it must have been the warm breezes or maybe the cocktails.
We felt even better once inside the white womb that is the Delano room. The rooms haven't really changed for at least 10 years and while still cool, hip even, they are now showing a little age and are too stuffed with merchandise.
We upgraded to a beach view room, threw open the windows and relaxed as the sea breezes blew across our weary white north east bodies....
The Conceirge and Spa service again were disappointments...what was happening to the service here. It seemed that there was a general lack of customer care - no returned calls, cancelled appintments, no reservations made, no-interest attitude...strange for a hotel that was noted for its service as much as its atmosphere.
Sustained after a lobster club sandwich and some chablis, the sparkling pool, cool cabanas, and hot bodies beckoned.
Our friend Juan arrived from a day on the beach to share the mojitos and teach us some basic convesational spanish that we could use on the pool staff.
More to follow...
