So you dont get to hear much Australian music here in the United States - its like Aussie Rules Footbal or Rugby - you really have to search. So it was with lost of pleasure that today on one of the true wonders of this country - National Public Radio - that I heard a whiole music programme dedicated to new Aussie music. And I discovered something that probably my aussie friends think is "so passe" - Augie March.
Augie March fromed in 1996 in Melbourne Victoria (for my american mates that is pronounced Mel- BUN) by singer/songwriter/guitarist Glenn Richards, drummer David Williams, guitarist Adam Donovan and bassist Edmondo Ammendola. They The chose the group's name "Augie March" in reference to the book The Adventures of Augie March by Saul Bellow , attributing the choice to the way in which Bellow's descriptive and poetic language reflected Richards' own song writing style.
This is atmospheric music that still has a raw edge. They played an acoustic set on the radio today but it appears they are not performing in any NYC venue - why? They are even playing in Perth for christs sake!
Here's a sample of Augie March's sound - One Crowded Hour.
